AWC in Sweden Scholarship - Three Recipients Awarded 2004-2005
Sarah T. - AWC in Stockholm Scholarship Grant Award

Originally from Hillsboro, Oregon, I'm currently pursuing a career as a flutist and enjoy both performing in orchestras and as a soloist. I graduated from Oberlin College Conservatory of Music in 2002, receiving a Bachelor of Music in Flute Performance, and I recently completed my Masters degree at New England Conservatory. My series of westward moves has
continued, and now I find myself in Sweden! This year I'll be working toward a Postgraduate Diploma in Orchestral Performance at the Kungliga Musikhögskolan (Royal College of Music) in Stockholm, where I'm studying with the Principal Flutist in the Swedish Radio Symphony. Right now I'm playing in the SAMI Sinfonietta, and as part of my program I can look forward to subbing in the Radio Symphony, the Stockholm Royal Philharmonic,
and the Royal Opera.

In my spare time, I enjoy reading, cooking, and hiking, so I'm very happy to find myself somewhere with such great food and a beautiful respect for nature. I also am slowly but surely writing a novel, and I've recently become interested in web design. Back home in the US, I've been quite involved in volunteering with local political campaigns, so I'm intrigued by
the prospect of seeing our American political process work from the outside this year.

I'm absolutely thrilled to be here in Stockholm, and I'm so grateful to the
AWC for their help and support! I look forward to meeting everyone this
year!

Becky Jean C. - AWC in Stockholm Scholarship Grant Award

I was born in Madison, Wisconsin, and was raised throughout the state. In 1998, I attended Michigan Technological University (MTU) in Houghton, Michigan. I earned a Bachelor of Science in the Biological Sciences, and a minor in the Visual Arts. I was active in Phi Sigma National Biological Honor Society, the Fine Arts Department, and Intramural Volleyball. As an undergraduate, I also worked in Michigan Tech’s Forestry Department as a Lab Technician in the Plant Biotechnology Research Center laboratories. I also held this position full time upon my graduation in December 2002.

I am currently studying at Lund University, participating in Lund University’s Masters Program in International Environmental Science (LUMES). It is a very unique program that focuses on human behaviors and their affects upon the environment. This program consists of students from thirty four different countries and is taught by members from many different faculties at the University.

In my spare time I enjoy music, painting, drawing, and pottery. I like to play volleyball, go running, and love to dance, especially salsa, merengue, and swing.

The LUMES program will be incredibly rewarding both academically and personally, and I am very thankful to have this opportunity made possible by the American Women’s Club in Sweden. I am looking forward to coming to Stockholm for this experience with the AWC!

Rachel L. - AWC in Stockholm Scholarship Grant Award

Hi AWC!

While I was born and raised in the metropolitan area north of New York City, I have spent the past four years as a student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. At UW, I earned a Bachelor's of Science in Biology and a Certificate in Environmental Studies. Outside of the classroom, I particularly enjoyed the time I spent organizing student volunteer groups who performed restoration work in a plot of woods located in the center of campus. During my senior year I had the opportunity to work with a Professor of Landscape Architecture and the manager of the campus's natural areas to develop a management plan for the site from the perspective of a student.

During the summers of 2003 and 2004, I worked as a research fellow for the United States Environmental Protection Agency in both their regional offices in Manhattan and their Atlantic Ecology Division in Narragansett, Rhode Island.

Currently, I am pursuing an International Masters Degree in Environmental Science at Lund University. This degree program is giving me the chance to study with an extremely diverse group of students in a country that is progressive with regard to its environmental policies; this is an experience that is providing me with a very new perspective on the environmental field.
In my spare time, I love to be in the outdoors and to learn about the natural world. I also enjoy painting and drawing, as well as traveling around and meeting new people.

I would like to thank the AWC-Stockholm for making my studies in Sweden possible. I am deeply grateful for your organization's generosity

On September 23rd, 2004 the American Women's Club hosted a reception at the US Ambassadors Residence which was organized by Rebecca Warnander, Kim Andersson, & Linda Pinkham to raise funds to support the AWC Scholarship Recipients for 2005. The event was attended by over 100 people, including all three of this year's scholarship recipients: Becky Jean Curtis, Rachel Licker, & Sarah Tiedemann. Two of our scholars are currently in the LUMES program at Lund University and the third is here with us in Stockholm, studying at the Royal College of Music. The AWC of Stockholm is pleased to announce that this year's event raised over 25,000 Swedish kroner.

All funds raised will be distributed in the form of travel grants that will be awarded to next year's American Women Club Scholars who will be joining us in Sweden in the Fall. A profile of each of our scholars will be added to the AWC Stockholm website in the near future. We will also be including more information about the AWC Stockholm Scholarship Program, as well as more information on our winners from previous years. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the Ambassador Bivins & his wife for the gracious support & hospitality in making this such a successful event. Most importantly, we thank you all for joining us in our first AWC Evening Event this year and greatly appreciate your support!!
